Car Insurance

How car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) works in Germany: compulsory liability, partial cover and comprehensive cover for damage to your own vehicle.

30 March 20264 min

Car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) is one of the most important policies you can and must take out as a vehicle owner in Germany. Motor liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung) is required by law: it protects other road users from the financial consequences of damage you cause with your vehicle. Without it, no vehicle can be registered in Germany.

But compulsory cover is only the start. If you also want to insure your own vehicle, you can choose between partial cover (Teilkasko) and comprehensive cover (Vollkasko). Partial cover applies to damage from theft, natural events such as hail or storms, collisions with wildlife and broken glass, no matter who caused the damage. Comprehensive cover goes a step further: it also pays for accident damage to your own vehicle that you caused yourself, as well as vandalism.

For most people the vehicle is one of the most expensive things they own, and they need it for work and family. Damage without enough insurance can quickly become a heavy financial burden. For newer or higher-value vehicles in particular, broad cover is worth having.

The premium depends on many factors: vehicle type and type class (Typklasse), the regional class of your home address (Regionalklasse), your personal no-claims discount (SF-Klasse), annual mileage, garage parking and more. Drivers with many claim-free years pay clearly lower premiums, so it pays to choose the right insurance early.

We help you find the right tariff, from the legally required liability cover up to a comprehensive package, with clear terms and no surprises.

You get the electronic insurance confirmation (eVB-Nummer) from your car insurer. You need the seven-character combination of digits and letters to register your car at the registration office. With Allianz you receive the eVB number online straight after you take out the policy.

If you drove less (or more) than agreed, you correct your annual mileage. Driving less lowers your premiums and you may get a refund. Your cover stays the same.

Give notice to your insurer at the latest one month before the contract ends. The usual deadline is 30 November. If your contract started on a different date, the notice period shifts accordingly. A special right of termination also exists.

Your no-claims class (SF-Klasse) can be transferred to family members, a second car or a new insurer. No-claims classes exist only for liability and comprehensive cover, not for partial cover. A transfer from EU countries and from certain other countries (for example Switzerland, Norway, Canada, USA) is also possible if the foreign insurance ended no more than six months ago.

Up to ten years. Your no-claims class is frozen. After that the no-claims discount lapses.

From the moment the insurer accepts the application, sends you the eVB number and issues the insurance certificate.
