Electric vehicles are now a regular sight on German roads. They offer low-emission mobility, government incentives and low running costs. They also have technical features of their own that you should keep in mind when choosing insurance.
As with any motor vehicle, motor liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung) is compulsory for electric cars. For most electric vehicles we also recommend comprehensive cover (Vollkaskoversicherung), because repair costs, especially for the high-voltage system or the battery, can be considerably higher than for conventional vehicles. Accidentally damaging the charging cable or a short circuit while charging can lead to substantial costs that you would have to pay yourself without comprehensive cover.
The battery is a central point in electric car insurance: it is the most expensive component of an electric vehicle and, depending on model and capacity, can cost several thousand euros. Some tariffs include battery insurance that covers damage from overvoltage, operating errors or wear. Whether the vehicle runs on an owned or a rented battery also affects the scope of cover.
Statistically, electric vehicles are considered safer vehicles, which can have a positive effect on the premium. At the same time, specialist workshops and spare parts are often more expensive, which should be taken into account when choosing a tariff.
We explain what to look for in electric car insurance and work with you to find the tariff that suits your vehicle and the way you use it.

Electric car examples from everyday life
Gross negligence while charging: Allianz waives the objection of gross negligence when charging the battery or parking. Mistakes happen quickly.
Overvoltage damage from a thunderstorm: lightning strikes a building while the car is charging and sends overvoltage through the charging cable to the electric car. The vehicle suffers overvoltage damage. Partial cover pays for the damage without a limit on the amount.
Battery fire while charging: building insurance (Wohngebäudeversicherung) responds if a battery fire during charging damages the charging point or your garage, although such incidents are rare because electric cars are very safe.
Theft of the charging cable: if the charging cable is stolen from a public charging point, partial cover pays the costs, even if an animal damages the accessory while it is charging.
Electric car insurance tips
Saving on electric car insurance costs:
- Agree an excess on partial or comprehensive cover: if you share the cost of own-vehicle claims (for example with €150 on partial cover), your premium is lower.
- Choose add-on modules: if you extend Allianz car insurance Komfort or Premium with optional modules such as WerkstattBonus or BonusDrive, you pay a reduced premium.
- Insure the electric car as a second car: if you already insure a vehicle with Allianz, your electric car starts in a better no-claims class (Schadenfreiheitsklasse). That saves you money on electric vehicle insurance.
Charging cable safety: if you regularly charge your electric car at a home socket, building insurance can make sense alongside electric car charging insurance.
Battery protection as a core benefit: in Komfort and Premium, comprehensive cover for electric cars includes all-risks cover for the battery. All damage is covered except wear and tear and material or design defects.
Sustainable extras: if a combustion-engine car or plug-in hybrid is a total loss or stolen and you switch to a fully electric car, Allianz pays a switching bonus of €2,500, provided the loss happens within the new-price compensation period.
