The need for care is a subject many people push aside. In reality, care can affect anyone, and the costs are considerable. Statutory long-term care insurance (gesetzliche Pflegeversicherung) covers only part of the actual cost of care. Anyone who does not plan ahead in time risks having to draw on their own savings, or burden relatives financially, if care is needed.
Care insurance in Germany has two branches: members of statutory health insurance are covered by social long-term care insurance (soziale Pflegeversicherung, SPV), members of private health insurance (PKV) by private long-term care insurance (private Pflegeversicherung, PPV). Both systems provide basic cover, but neither pays all costs. The so-called care gap (Pflegelücke), the difference between actual care costs and the benefits of the compulsory insurance, can amount to several thousand euros a month.
Costs for residential care in a German care home range from €2,500 to over €5,000 a month, depending on the federal state and the home. Statutory care insurance covers at most around €2,000 of that. The rest has to be paid by the person concerned from their own means or, if those are not enough, by relatives.
Private care insurance closes this gap. Depending on the product, it pays a monthly care amount once you are assigned a care level (Pflegegrad), provides a care pension concept (Pflegerente) or pays out a lump sum to use as you wish. Premiums depend on the age at which you join: if you start early, you pay clearly less and secure long-term stability.
We help you find the right care product and plan ahead in time, so you stay independent and financially self-reliant if you need care.
