Pet Health Insurance

How pet health insurance (Tierkrankenversicherung) covers vet bills for dogs, cats and horses, which can turn out unexpectedly high.

30 March 20263 min

For many people in Germany, pets are more than animals. They are loyal companions and a full member of the family. When a beloved animal falls ill or gets hurt, owners want the best possible medical care without losing track of the costs. Vet bills in Germany can be high, especially when specialists, complex examinations or operations are needed. This is where pet health insurance (Tierkrankenversicherung) comes in and gives you important financial protection.

Pet health insurance pays for veterinary treatment that arises from illness or injury. In Germany no law requires owners to take out health insurance for their animals. It is voluntary cover. Even so, more and more owners choose such a policy, because veterinary medicine keeps getting more advanced and therefore more expensive. What was once a special wish is becoming normal for responsible owners.

Modern diagnostics and treatment in veterinary medicine are impressive, and so are the prices. MRI scans, chemotherapy, heart operations or orthopaedic procedures on animals can easily cost several thousand euros. In such situations many owners face a hard dilemma: weighing the wellbeing of the animal they love against their own finances. Pet health insurance resolves that dilemma by covering the financial side, so medical decisions can be made purely for the animal's sake.

Pet health insurance is for all owners who want the best for their animals without falling into financial difficulty. It is especially worth considering for owners of dogs, cats and horses, because these animals often need more intensive medical care and the costs can be high. Owners of other species can benefit too, since a vet visit can turn out unexpectedly expensive for almost any animal.

When you take out pet health insurance, check the scope of cover carefully: are all illnesses and injuries covered? What about pre-existing conditions? Is there a waiting period after the contract starts? What is the reimbursement rate, and is there an excess? Comparing several providers is worthwhile, as benefits and costs can vary a lot.

We are glad to help you find the right policy for your animal. That way you can be there for your companion in an emergency without compromising on finances.

Pet health insurance benefits

Allianz pet health insurance offers the following main benefits:

Operations: unlimited cover for surgery. Depending on the tariff you choose, the insurer pays the costs of operations up to an unlimited sum per year.

Cost reimbursement: 100% of vet costs covered, up to 100 percent, for an operation (for tariffs without an excess).

Accident cover: no waiting period for accidents. After an accident the insurer pays treatment costs without a waiting period.

Switching advantage: if you switch from another pet health insurer and take out the policy within 14 days, Allianz waives waiting periods for risks that were already insured.

Preventive care: preventive care already in the surgery cover. Vaccinations, worming and microchip implantation (basic preventive care) are already covered in the surgery cover.

Excess: customers can choose an excess of 10 or 20 percent to get lower premiums.

Additional benefits in full cover: treatments without an operation, alternative therapies such as homeopathy, and in the Premium tariff no annual upper limit.

Yes, pet health insurance makes sense for all pet owners. It protects against unexpected, high treatment costs at the vet, for example because of an operation. Vet costs for operations under anaesthetic can quickly reach several thousand euros. Treatments without an operation can also get expensive. Your four-legged friend deserves the same medical protection you have.

Surgery-only insurance is enough if you want to protect yourself specifically against high costs from necessary operations. It suits animals that are otherwise healthy and need no regular treatment. Full cover is broader: it also pays for many treatments without an operation, which may become necessary because of allergies, stomach problems or chronic complaints.

Yes, animals with pre-existing conditions or acute illness can be insured too. The application asks about your animal's health, and you must state all illnesses and vet treatments you know of from the last 24 months. Only newly arising illnesses are covered. Costs for existing illnesses and their consequences are not insured.

For dogs and cats the insurance includes worldwide cover abroad for trips of up to 12 months. For horses, cover applies during temporary stays in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom for up to twelve months.
