Supplementary Hospital Insurance

We explain how supplementary hospital insurance goes beyond statutory cover to pay for chief physician treatment and single rooms.

30 March 20262 min

A hospital stay is rarely planned, but when it comes, most people want the best care possible. Statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV) does pay for medically necessary treatment, but extras such as chief physician treatment, single or two-bed rooms and special comfort services are not in the GKV benefit catalogue. Supplementary hospital insurance (Krankenhauszusatzversicherung) fills this gap.

With supplementary hospital insurance, you choose the doctor who treats you, regardless of who is on duty on the ward. A chief physician or attending doctor of your choice, a guaranteed two-bed or single room, a quieter and more comfortable setting while you recover: in a serious case these benefits can help recovery a great deal, and many people see them as a real difference in quality.

Many tariffs also offer further benefits: payment for rooming-in during inpatient treatment of children, accommodation for an accompanying person, payment for elective services such as special diagnostic procedures or post-operative care.

The premium for supplementary hospital insurance is manageable compared with the benefit it gives in a serious case. The earlier you join, the lower the premium, because your age at the start of the policy is decisive.

We find the supplementary hospital insurance that meets your requirements and gives you the care you want if you fall ill.
