The state-subsidised supplementary care tariff known as "Pflege-Bahr" is a way, with state support, to close the gap between statutory care insurance (gesetzliche Pflegeversicherung) and the actual cost of care. With a state subsidy of up to 60 euros a year (5 euros a month with a personal contribution of at least 10 euros), this model gives people on low incomes extra care cover as well.
The special feature of Pflege-Bahr: there is no health check when you take out the contract. The waiting period is five years, and it does not apply after an accident. People who already have pre-existing conditions or are older can still take out a subsidised supplementary care tariff, with no risk loadings or exclusions. That makes this tariff especially attractive for people who would otherwise struggle to get private care insurance.
The state subsidy is up to 60 euros a year and requires you to pay at least 10 euros a month yourself and the product to be state-certified.
Pflege-Bahr benefits are paid out as a monthly pension when you need care, on top of statutory care insurance. This closes part of the care gap, although Pflege-Bahr alone is usually not enough to cover all costs.
We advise you on whether Pflege-Bahr is the right addition to your existing cover and how to combine it sensibly with other care products.
