Horse Surgery Insurance

We explain how horse surgery insurance covers high vet costs for medically necessary operations after an accident, illness or developmental disorder.

When a horse needs an operation, it is a strain on the owner both emotionally and financially. Horse operations are among the most expensive veterinary procedures of all. Horse surgery insurance (Pferde-OP-Versicherung) gives financial protection for exactly these cases and lets owners give their animal the treatment it needs without financial compromise. In a medical emergency, the decision should be made solely in the animal's interest.

There are many reasons for a horse operation. Colic is one of the most common. When conservative treatment does not help, surgery can save the horse's life. Fractures, joint problems, stomach ulcers, eye operations or gynaecological procedures in mares can also become necessary. Such procedures are usually expensive, and complicated operations can cost 10,000 euros or more. Hardly anyone can pay that sum without financial preparation.

Horse surgery insurance is a specialised form of horse insurance that concentrates solely on operations. It is usually cheaper than full health insurance for the horse, yet gives financial backing if an operation becomes necessary. For owners who want to limit their monthly insurance costs, it is a sensible option with a clear focus.

Horse surgery insurance is especially important for owners of older horses, since the risk of surgery rises with age, and for breeds known to develop certain conditions that need surgery. Sport horses, which are under greater physical strain, also have a statistically higher risk of surgery. In all these cases surgery insurance can pay off quickly.

When taking out horse surgery insurance, look at the sum insured, waiting periods, exclusions for pre-existing conditions and the reimbursement rate. Some insurers also reimburse the cost of necessary euthanasia if the animal cannot be saved after an operation. In such a case that can ease the burden.
